Hello hello all of you! I’m literally just jumping into this post. I literally get so many messages about people moving to Chicago. This is SUCH a loaded question I don’t really know where to start so I decided to try and put everything into one quick (as always) post for you to refer to.
The first thing you have to think about is what neighborhood you want to be in. Are you north side or south side? Both great but once you move here you’ll learn that every neighborhood has it’s own personality. For me, I think of Lincoln Park as college kids and rich families. River North is the former frat bro ordering vodka tonics on Friday night. West loop is full of young, rich finance people who have good taste in restaurants. You just gotta figure out what neighborhood you wanna be in.
Your budget is obviously expensive and of course there are neighborhoods that are more expensive than others. Personally, I live in a studio. I know I’m not home a lot and actually enjoy living in a small area. So get a broker (mine was free and amazing) and stay within your budget. You may not be able to live in the loop or Gold Coast but it’s not worth being house poor.
My biggest advice to moving here is taking advantage of all the events. There are SO many free things in the city that you can enjoy and get out to meet new people. Eventbrite should be your best friend and get out there and go to as many things as you can. It’s great and will allow you to meet so many people!
Yes, it gets cold here. But no, it’s not unbearable. I personally love the winter because I love to stay inside with Luna and hang out. But the best advice is, it sucks when it’s 0 degrees. But we are all struggling together and you just get through it because summer is so so worth it.
I hope some of these things help you out when you decide to make the move. Like I said, this is such a loaded question but if you have any specific questions you’re always welcome to DM me with questions!
